Saudi Arabia has made a major change in the law of granting national citizenship. The phrase "by the decision of the Minister of Interior" in the law has been replaced by "on the proposal of the Minister of Interior and by order of the Prime Minister". According to the Saudi Gazette report, under the new amendment, Saudi citizenship will be granted to the child of a foreign father and a Saudi mother upon fulfilling a few conditions when born in the country.
Conditions include reaching the legal age for citizenship, permanent residence in the state, good morals and character, and no criminal record. In addition, the applicant for citizenship must not have been sentenced to imprisonment of more than six months for any indecent offense and must be proficient in and fluent in the Arabic language.
On the instructions of the Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammad Bin Salman, the amendment to the citizenship law was introduced.
After this new amendment in the law, the power to grant citizenship has now gone to the Prime Minister and the Crown Prince. The Minister of Interior will only be able to propose and the decision to grant citizenship or not will be made by the Prime Minister (Crown Prince). It should be noted that on September 27 last year, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was also given the post of Prime Minister. This change was interpreted as the adoption of a democratic government setup alongside the monarchy in Saudi Arabia.
Mohammed bin Salman has served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense under the leadership of his father, King Salman. Mohammed bin Salman has instituted many cultural and social changes in Saudi Arabia over the years. He was succeeded as Minister of Defense by his younger brother Khalid bin Salman, who was previously Deputy Minister of Defence.
