Dubai launches solar powered rail bus service: A Leap Towards Sustainable Urban Mobility

A modern solar-powered 'Railbus' was launched in Dubai. According to Emirati media, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) launched the 'Railbus' at the World Government Summit in Dubai, an innovative and eco-friendly transport offering an efficient and cost-effective alternative transport mode to existing options, with an operational speed of 100 km/h, a capacity of 40 passengers, the railcar is solar powered to generate the electricity required to run it.

The rail car travels on a bridge equipped with solar panels to generate the electricity needed to run it. It is reported that in January last year, RTA signed a memorandum of understanding with US company Rail Bus Inc to develop a rail bus system at the Dubai International Project Management Forum (DIPMF), besides another MoU was signed with UK-based Urban Mass Company to explore the possibility of developing a Fluke Dove rail system.

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled this prototype of the Rail Bus, a solar-powered, 3D-printed transit vehicle designed to revolutionize urban mobility. This initiative aligns with Dubai's commitment to sustainability and innovation in public transportation.

Each carriage measures 11.5 meters in length, 2.65 meters in width, and 2.9 meters in height, accommodating up to 40 passengers, with 22 ergonomic seats per carriage. The vehicle is designed for speeds up to 100 km/h, offering a swift and comfortable travel experience.

Constructed using 3D-printed recyclable materials, the Rail Bus is fully powered by solar energy, significantly reducing its carbon footprint and supporting Dubai's environmental goals.

The vehicle operates autonomously, aligning with Dubai's Self-Driving Transport Strategy 2030, which aims to transition 25% of daily trips to autonomous journeys by the end of the decade. It is designed to integrate seamlessly with Dubai's existing public transport network, enhancing first and last-mile connectivity.

The Rail Bus features overhead screens providing real-time journey updates, including upcoming stops, weather conditions, and time. It also includes dedicated spaces for passengers with disabilities, ensuring accessibility for all.

This project supports Dubai's ambitious strategies, including the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy and Dubai's Zero-Emissions Public Transport Strategy 2050, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable urban living.

While an official launch date has  announced, the RTA plans to conduct in-depth technical studies over the next two years to determine optimal locations for pilot operations. The Rail Bus is expected to become a key component of Dubai's public transport network, offering a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional transit systems.

The unveiling of the Rail Bus prototype at the World Government Summit 2025 has generated significant public interest, highlighting Dubai's dedication to innovation and sustainable urban mobility.

Abdul Mohsin Kalbat said, "The signing of these two MoUs is part of RTA's strategic plans to engage with leading companies and specialized institutions in the sector to identify and adopt the most sophisticated and innovative methods, RTA is exploring many innovations in the field of transport systems.

Hatim Ibrahim, CEO of Railbus Inc., said that the collaboration with RTA has set new standards in sustainable mobility to meet the unique needs of Dubai's dynamic landscape.

It reinforces the commitment to contribute to the commitment to sustainable urban development
